VIRTUAL ESSAY

My chosen photographer is Steve McCurry. I heard of him when I was in high school during my photography classes. Our teacher showed a picture from the National Geographic Magazine of a 12 year old young girl with a nice eyes looking so innocent.

Here’s a little background about Steve McCurry. A lot of people must have seen his images by most people probably don’t know his name. He was the most famous for his picture of Sharbat Gula, the Afghani refugee girl with the striking eyes. Some say that the image was the most recognizable photograph in the world. He had images included on magazine covers and newspapers. His color photography has made him a name and won him many tributes with his entire eminent career. Capturing his famous image was taken when he concealed himself and snitched past the Pakistani border guards and entered Afghanistan prior to the Russians invading. This is one of the experience that where many would not dare. Now what makes Steve McCurry’s images so striking? It’s because, he does not focus on what he went through to capture the moment, it was his ability to capture the depth soul and the essence of his subjects.

What sets him apart from the others? Far from portrait-style photography in a studio setting, his photo journalistic style, structure, colour and ability to snap the shutter at just the right time is what set his images apart from the others. The ability to capture the essence of a person in the midst of the conflicts of war has set McCurry apart from almost everyone else in the industry. He simply keeps shooting until they forget he is there and a camera is present and eventually, their essence comes out and he captures it. By trying to find and capture the genuine and pure essence of people, McCurry has provided the world with some true works of art.

This picture was captured by Steve McCurry, an American photojournalist who has taken some of the world’s most recognised photographs. This photograph was taken in Afghanistan during the Russian Invasion. McCurry captured this image disguised as a local with film sewn into his clothes. His photos are striking, moving and thought- provoking. This photograph has strong enthralling content and the repetition of the people and shoes makes the overall image really interesting. I admire McCurry’s originality and boldness.

After 17 years Steve McCurry was able to tracked down the young girl that made him famous.

Apart from ``Afghan Girl``, ``The Dust Storm`` was also one of his favorites.

Here`s a little video from youtube.com that I found speaking his reflections in some of his photographs.

PHOTO MANIPULATION

This is a photograph that I took last in Toronto Harbourfront last summer. My model was my boyfriend using the Sony Cybershot Dscw330/l 14.1mp Digital Camera.

The second photograph is altered and modified on an online editing tool picnic.com. First, I adjusted the exposure and the contrast to give the image more colour and life. I also adjusted the saturation and the temperature to add vibrant to the photograph. In addition to that, I sharpen the image. And the last one that I did was gone to the Effects tool bar then selected the Cross Process then controlled the fade effect.

In this altered photograph, the essence of the image was more modified. Since this was taken in summer, the ambiance of the altered image was more suitable rather than the first one. The first one was more cool effect and flat and blunt. The altered image brought the picture its true beauty because it has more colour and looks more alive.
